Nanten is a plant that has been valued as a medicinal herb to suppress evil spirits since ancient times, passed down from China during the Heian period.
From the end of autumn to the beginning of winter, it bears many bright red berries, and because the reading of "nanten" can mean "to turn difficulties into happiness," it has been cherished as a talisman for this wish.
Also, placing it in the entrance is believed to prevent bad energy, which is another meaning of exorcism.
