Sasano Itto-bori carving "Ancient Poppo" Red/Black set, interior ornament
What is Sasano Itto-bori Carving?
Sasano Itto-bori is a religious toy that has been handed down by farmers living in the Sasano area of Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, for more than a thousand years.
Traditional craftsmen carefully carve each piece of wood, such as "koshia" wood, using only a blade called a "sarkiri" to make them.
Good luck charms to promote offspringhood and ward off evil spirits
The most representative works of Sasano Itto-bori are "Chicken," "Seirei," and "Taka Popo.
It is based on the recommendation of Takayama Uesugi, the feudal lord of Yonezawa, to be frugal and diligent in order to reform finances, and to "wake up early like a chicken" and "procreate like a sekirei". If this happens, "your stipend will go up like a gullion," as the story goes.
This ancient poppo is a reprinted version of the hawk poppo that used to be made in the past.
It is recommended as a congratulatory gift, such as for the birth of a child.
