Wishes and prayers contained in traditional patterns

[Nanten pattern]

Nandina domestica

Nantian was introduced from China during the Heian period (794-1185) and has been valued since ancient times as an herbal medicine for suppressing coughs.

It is popular as a lucky tree because it bears many glossy red berries from the end of autumn to the beginning of winter, and because its name means "to turn a difficult situation into a good fortune.

It is also meant to ward off evil spirits by placing it at the entrance.

An encyclopedia from the Edo period says, "Planting Nanten prevents fire," and many private houses planted Nanten in unlucky directions as a "fire prevention" and as a safeguard of the house.

People have long placed their wishes in the shape of ginkgo trees, such as their strong vitality for longevity, their spreading leaves for attracting good fortune, and their golden leaves for good financial luck.
