Potato Bag Acrobat
A cute, rounded bag that looks like a little potato.
Because of its rounded bottom, it holds plenty and is practical and easy to access.
The fabric used for the bag is makumo's original material. From sewing to the fabric design and dyeing, everything is done by hand, so the unique patterns and color combinations can only be found here.
At first glance it looks like a botanical print, but on closer inspection there are designs inspired by animals. It's strange yet cute, finished as a bag full of playful humor.
Gentle on the user
The potato bag is a larger size with a mouth width of 40cm and a height of 30cm. Because it uses sturdy canvas fabric (cotton), you can feel secure even when packing it full.
The opening has a zipper, which is another nice point that keeps the contents secure.
The shoulder straps are wrapped with quilt batting for a gentle carrying feel.
They are also adjustable, so you can use it as a tote or as a shoulder bag.
Valuing playfulness
The inside of the bag is a vivid purple.
Every time you put things in or take them out, your heart might skip a beat—there's that playful spirit hidden inside the bag.
There is also an inner pocket to neatly store small items.
It starts with the fabric design
The base is a pure white canvas fabric.
makumo's bags begin with the fabric design.
Designer Fukuyama graduated from an art school dyeing department and, after experience with paper cutting and other techniques, launched makumo. The patterns and color combinations she creates are pop yet carry a nostalgic retro feel—vivid and distinctive.
Differences in expression born from handcrafting
It is Mr. Araki who brings Fukuyama's designs to life.
The technique used is "tenassen (hand printing) / silkscreen." For each color a stencil is made, and with a large squeegee called a skiji, the dye is pressed into the fabric and layered carefully one color at a time.
The fabric dyed this way shows subtle variations even in the same design, creating depth and warmth that digital printing cannot reproduce.
The fabric, completed after many steps, is then transformed into the potato bag by skilled sewing artisans.
