Potato Bag — Galaxy Cluster
A cute, rounded bag shaped like a little potato.
With its rounded bottom it holds plenty and is practical and easy to access.
The fabric used for the bag is makumo's original textile. From sewing to the fabric design and dyeing, everything is done by hand, so you'll find unique patterns and colorways you won't see anywhere else.
The casually scattered large and small stars resemble a real galaxy. It's a simple yet memorable design.
Gentle for the wearer
The Potato Bag is a fairly large size with a mouth width of 40cm and a height of 30cm. Made from sturdy canvas (cotton), you can feel confident carrying plenty of items.
The opening has a zipper so your belongings are securely protected.
The shoulder straps are wrapped with quilt batting for a gentle feel.
They are also adjustable, so you can use it as a tote or as a shoulder bag.
Keeping a sense of playfulness
The inside of the bag is a vivid sky blue.
Every time you reach inside, you might feel a little spark of joy — that playful surprise is hidden in the lining.
There's also an inner pocket for neatly storing small items.
The story starts with the fabric design
The base is pure white canvas.
makumo's bags begin with the fabric design.
Designer Fukuyama graduated from an art school dyeing department and after experience with paper cutting and other techniques launched makumo. The patterns and colorways she creates are pop yet carry a nostalgic, retro vibe — vivid and distinctive.
Unique variations born from handcraft
Turning Fukuyama's designs into fabric is Araki.
The technique used is "tenassen (hand dyeing) / silkscreen." For each color a stencil is made, and the dye is pushed through the screen with a large squeegee, carefully layering one color at a time.
The dyed fabrics, even with the same design, show slight variations in expression, giving depth and warmth that digital printing can't reproduce.
After many steps, the finished fabric is transformed into the Potato Bag by skilled sewing artisans.
