A charming round bag with a cute, plump shape like a potato.
Because of its rounded bottom it holds plenty and is practical and easy to use.
The fabric used for the bag is makumo's original material. From sewing to the fabric design and dyeing, everything is done by hand, so you’ll find unique patterns and colorings you won’t see anywhere else.
The animals’ adorable expressions and playful patterns make for a delightful design that draws the eye. Although the designs are distinctive, the muted colors make them easy to incorporate into everyday use.
Gentle for the user
The Potato Bag is a generously sized bag with a mouth width of 40cm and a height of 30cm. Made from sturdy canvas (cotton), it gives peace of mind even when filled with lots of items.
The opening has a zipper to securely protect the contents—another welcome feature.
The shoulder strap wraps quilt batting for a gentle feel.
It is also adjustable in length, so you can use it as a tote or as a shoulder bag.
Valuing playfulness
The inside of the bag is a vivid green.
Every time you put items in or take them out, your heart lifts a little—this playful surprise is hidden inside the bag.
It also has an inner pocket to keep small items neatly organized.
It starts with the fabric design
The base is pure white canvas.
makumo’s bags begin with the fabric design.
Designer Fukuyama graduated from a design school specializing in dyeing, and after experience with paper cutting and other crafts, she founded makumo. The patterns and colorings that come from her hands are pop yet somehow nostalgically retro, vivid and distinctive.
Variations born from handcraft
It is Mr./Ms. Araki who brings Fukuyama’s designs to life.
The technique used is "tenassen (hand printing) / silk screen." A stencil is made for each color, and using a large squeegee called a skeg, the dye is carefully pressed into the fabric one color at a time.
The dyed fabrics, even with the same design, show slight variations in expression, creating depth and warmth that digital printing cannot reproduce.
After many steps, the finished fabric is handed to sewing artisans who transform it into the Potato Bag.
