Feeling the Breath of the Craftsman: The Existence of the "Sasano Ittoubori"

The Sasano Ittoubori (Sasano Itto-bori) is a traditional craft toy that has been handed down by the hands of farmers living in the Sasano area of Yamagata Prefecture's Yonezawa City for thousands of years.

Wood such as "Koshiabura," which is a traditional material for craftsmen, is carefully carved one by one with a blade called "Sarukiri."

Objects to Ward Off Child Mortality and Evil Spirits

Representative works of Sasano Ittoubori include "Niwatori" (chicken), "Sekirei" (warbler), and "Otakapoppo" (small bird).

According to the financial reform and encouragement of diligence by the lord of Yonezawa, "Mount Uesugi Takayama," there is a tradition of "waking up early like a chicken" and "thriving children like a warbler." From this, the saying "Otakapoppo rises up" has come about.

These are recommended as celebratory gifts for childbirth and other occasions.
