Pine trees are a symbol of prosperity

The pine tree is a plant that the Japanese have long loved as a sacred symbol.

The plant has been associated with the wish for "longevity" in its lush foliage, even in the coldest of winters, and "prosperity of offspring" in its characteristic of male and female flowers on a single plant.

Since the Edo period (1603-1867), it has been depicted on the wooden walls of Noh stages as a plant in which the gods dwell, and kadomatsu, a pine tree used to welcome the New Year, has become an indispensable part of both the performing arts and our daily lives.

The pine tree's powerful vitality and beauty are much loved by many people even today.
