Sasano Ittobori is a religious toy that has been passed down by farmers living in the Sasano district of Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture for over a thousand years.
Each piece is carefully carved by traditional craftsmen using only a knife called a sarkiri from wood such as kosiabura.

As Yonezawa feudal lord Yozan Uesugi recommended frugality and hard work in order to reform his finances, he encouraged people to ``wake up early like chickens'' and ``prosperate like Sekirei''.It comes from the saying that if that happens, your stipend will rise dramatically.
