Chudyed Tenugui “Horse Eye”

A dyed tenugui with a horse's eye motif that gives you a gentle and nostalgic feeling.

Based on the design by dyer Yumi Ishikita, each piece was carefully dyed by a dyeing workshop in Hamamatsu.

 

The beautiful bleeds that are unique to chusen and the alternative to solid dyeing add gentle color to your daily life.

All chuzome dyeing is done by hand, so there may be individual differences in how the dye bleeds and the coloring.

There may be some uneven coloring or areas where the dye is not completely dyed, but we hope that you will enjoy the unique taste of hand-dyed dyeing.

[Gluing] Left

This is a process where you use a paper pattern and carefully apply resist dye paste to the parts of the pattern that you want to leave a little bit of.

This glue prevents the dye from soaking into the fabric and allows the outline of the pattern to be clearly seen.

 

[Dyeing (chudying)] Right

It is a process of dyeing by pouring dye from above using a tool called a kettle.

The poured dye penetrates deep into the fabric, creating a beautiful finish with no front or back sides.

The smudges and fluctuations that are unique to handmade dyeing are also part of the taste of chusen.

 

[Washing] Left

After dyeing, the cloth is carefully washed in a water tank to remove the dye and paste, which is a hassle-free process.

This wash softens the color and creates a soft texture.

 

[Drying] Right

After washing the cloth, hang it up high and let it dry in the natural wind and light.

The sight of it swaying in the wind is one of the beautiful scenes unique to Chusen.

[About the creator]

Dyer Yumi Ishikita

A dyer living in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Using motifs from daily life and natural shapes, we create dyed works that convey the warmth of handiwork. He expresses traditional techniques with modern sensibilities and has received high praise both domestically and internationally.

 

・1997 Graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design, Department of Crafts

・2012: Selected for the 86th “Kokuten” for the first time

・2014 88th “Kokuten” Newcomer Award Winner

・2016 “Japan Folk Crafts Museum Exhibition” Encouragement Award Received
